Used to discuss the quantity of something.

Many is used with countable nouns.

Much is used with uncountable nouns.

A lot can be used with both countable and uncountable nouns.

Many and much are often used with 'How' to create questions on quantity, number or level.

So can also be used in front of much and many to exaggerate a quantity, highlighting an extreme situation.  These sentences can indicate both positive and negative comments, and must therefore be understood by intonation, and within their context, the entire sentence.

There were so many people.  (this could indicate that the festival was very popular and therefore very good.

There were so many people.  (this could indicate that there was not enough room for everyone and that the festival was overcrowded and dangerous)
